Why Gen Z Gives Differently
One of the biggest mistakes nonprofits make is assuming Gen Z doesn’t care about giving... because they do.
They just don’t give the way previous generations did.
Gen Z gives through donations, yes... but also through attention, advocacy, volunteering, content creation, community-building, and amplification. For them, support means participating. For Gen Z, giving is not a mere transaction... it's an identity.
And that perspective shift matters.
This generation grew up in a world of real-time updates, creator-led storytelling, and instant access to information. They don’t just want to hear that a nonprofit is “making a difference.” They want to see the difference.
They want proof... they want progress... they want visibility... and they want emotion.
In many ways, Gen Z’s giving decisions are shaped by (4) core signals: impact, transparency, trust, and innovation.
That’s also why creators matter more than many nonprofits realize.
Millennials and Gen Z are 4x more likely than older generations to discover social causes through creators. Not ads, not billboards, not traditional campaigns. Just organically on social media all because of creators.
Why? Because creators have what institutions often struggle to build: trust and attention
The future nonprofit organizations won’t just be great at fundraising. They’ll be great at storytelling, collaboration, and community participation. They’ll understand that creators are no longer “marketing add-ons," creators are reliable distribution channels for trust.
A sub-set of nonprofits have already caught on to this clear trend... and the more nonprofits that embrace this early will have a major advantage over the next decade.
Because the future donor doesn’t just want to give to a mission.
They want to feel connected to it.
Until next time y'all ✌🏾
